Oil Heating System Upgrade and Insurance

If you heat your house with oil in Massachusetts there’s a new law designed to help prevent oil leaks from pipes connected to your furnace.

From the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP):

This law has two major provisions that require:

  • the installation of either an oil safety valve or an oil supply line with protective sleeve on systems that do not currently have these devices; and
  • insurance companies that write homeowner policies to offer coverage for leaks from heating systems that use oil.

Most heating systems installed before 1990 will be to be upgraded and you have until July 1st to do so.

For complete information see the MassDEP website.
