An Earthquake in Massachusetts?

An earthquake in Massachusetts?  Not yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.  There’s a pretty good chance it will happen actually.  We’ve had them before.  We’ve had a lot and we’ve had them relatively often in the past.  Since the disaster in Haiti, and then Chile, and now a quake in Turkey, earthquake safety has been a concern for a lot of people, though not necessarily something they thought to apply to their own lives.

We think of California as the place for earthquakes in this country, and that isn’t wrong.  There is a very well-defined fault line in California called the San Andreas Fault.  It’s easy to study, everyone knows where it is, and it causes some major earthquakes.  In the Northeast there is no such fault, and geologists have worked for years to figure out exactly why these earthquakes happen.  There is a good and brief history of Massachusetts earthquakes here.

Despite not fully understanding the cause of earthquakes in New England and the Northeastern, it’s understood that they have happened and will happen again.  Due to the population density along the east coast of the United States it is also considered to be one of the most high risk areas for injury and property damage.  If even a medium-sized earthquake were to happen near New York City or Boston, the effects would be devastating.

Earthquake insurance exists, though people around here don’t often think it’s something worth buying.  Chances are you’ve never felt an earthquake and you probably never will.  You can read here about some easy and low-cost ways to make your home a little safer if an earthquake happens.  Or you can call us to see how much coverage will cost.
