New Smoke Alarm Regulations in Effect

Pushed back from January 1st to give homeowners and local fire departments more time to come into compliance, new smoke alarm regulations came into effect on April 5th for any homes being sold or transferred.

This new regulation calls for photoelectric smoke detectors to be installed within 20 feet of kitchen or bathrooms containing a tub or a shower where previously ionization detectors were required.  This is due to false reading the former type of detector can give in the presence of steam or cooking fumes.

This new regulation only applies to residential properties of up to five units relying on battery powered smoke detectors, and only those being sold or transferred after April 5th 2010.  That doesn’t mean the upgrade isn’t a good idea for everyone, though.
