Tax Filing Extension for Federal Disaster Area Residents

Scrabble TaxThe flooding here in Massachusetts certainly hasn’t made anything easier.  If you live in one of the counties declared a federal disaster area because of these floods you are getting a bit of a break.  The federal government is granting an extension to the April 15th tax filing deadline to May 11th in order to give those affected by the floods a little more time.

People have had a lot of questions about the particulars, and fortunately things are as easy as they can get.  If you’re asking yourself “do I need to do this?” to be eligible for the extension, the answer is no.  If you live in one of the counties for which the extension applies then you have the extension.  No requests for the time, no proof of damages.

The only catch is that if, even with the extension, you still file your taxes late then you will be charged penalties and interest from April 15th.  To say that again, if you live in one of the affected counties and file after May 11th then you will be charged late fees starting on April 15th.
