Moving Freight More Safely, Smoothly, and Sustainably

A lot of attention has been paid since the new administration came into office on how we move freight and how we can do it better. Specifically making it safe, efficient, and sustainable. The goals of the Senate Budget Committee have been very clear so far. Safety, Livability and Environmental Sustainability, and Economic Competitiveness and a State of Good Repair are all outlined for 2011.

There are now two more important funds that will directly affect the trucking community. Already passed is TIGER II, a $600 million national infrastructure investment program designated for high priority projects needed to upgrade our shipping networks. Also submitted to Congress is the National Infrastructure Innovation and Finance Fund which will go to cross jurisdiction, multimodal projects

These are both in addition to the original TIGER Discretionary Fund, of which $765 million went towards freight related projects. Improving the trucking industry, and freight transportation in general, is moving forward and that only means more jobs and better conditions across the board.
